"Problems cannot be solved on the battlefield," said Modi in Vienna, where he met with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer after his visit to Moscow. "Loss of innocent lives is unacceptable, no matter where it takes place," Modi said after his talks with the Austrian leader. His visits to Moscow and Vienna take place against the backdrop of massive Russian missile attacks on Ukraine. On Monday, a children's hospital in Kiev was badly damaged. According to the Ukrainian military administration, at least 27 people were killed in the capital.
In Moscow, Modi and Putin emphasized the close relations between India and Russia. According to a joint statement, both countries want to continue cooperating on military technologies.
Austria offers itself for Ukraine negotiations
India recently took part in the international Ukraine summit in Switzerland, but was only represented there by a senior official. "We spoke today about an even stronger commitment," said Austrian Chancellor Nehammer, who is in favor of a more intensive involvement of large countries of the global South in peace efforts. Neutral Austria is available as a venue for future Ukraine diplomacy, said Nehammer.
Because Russian oil is cheap due to Western sanctions, India has become one of the largest customers. The country also purchases military equipment from Russia. In the Ukraine war, the government in New Delhi is repeatedly calling on all sides to engage in dialog.
