It is the first time in more than ten years that an Iranian foreign minister has traveled to Egypt. Relations between the two countries are actually tense.
Their differences include their attitude towards Israel. Egypt concluded a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, while Tehran regards the Jewish state as its arch-enemy and supports armed groups in the fight against Israel. Iran's government sees Egypt's critical stance against the Israeli warfare in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon as an opportunity to pursue common interests. Even before the outbreak of the Gaza war, Egypt and Iran wanted to normalize their relations.
Araghchi had previously held talks in Jordan, a country which, like Egypt, also has good relations with the West.
