According to Isna, the crime was committed more than four years ago. The two men had fled in a vehicle after a theft, opened fire during the chase and killed a police officer in the process. They were later arrested in another province. Around two years later, the death sentence was imposed. According to Islamic law in Iran, the men were charged with "waging war against God" and "corruption on earth", according to the report.
According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, 853 people were executed in Iran last year, the highest number since 2015. Executions in connection with the mass demonstrations and the women's movement in the fall of 2022 caused a particularly large international protest.
