The political director of the Hamas office in Doha, Ismail Hanjia, was killed at the end of July during a visit to Iran. The Islamic Republic holds the arch-enemy Israel responsible.
Militias allied with Iran had recently been considerably weakened militarily. The Secretary General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli operation. In revenge for the killing, Iran's Revolutionary Guards fired around 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday.
