Hours after Israel and the Hezbollah militia fired on each other, negotiations on a ceasefire in the Gaza war are to continue. An Israeli delegation arrived in Cairo, as the German Press Agency learned from circles at the airport in the Egyptian capital. The 13-strong delegation included representatives of the Israeli government for security issues.

The Islamist Hamas has also sent representatives to Cairo, led by senior functionary Chalil al-Haja. As before, Hamas does not want to take part in the talks, but wants to be informed about their progress.
The talks have been stalled for months. As with the most recent round of negotiations in Qatar, the aim is to close the gaps in the positions of Hamas and Israel and to reach agreement on a ceasefire. Despite the diplomatic efforts of the mediating countries, there are doubts as to whether there could be a breakthrough on Sunday in Cairo.
As Hamas and Israel are not negotiating directly with each other, the USA, Qatar and Egypt are acting as mediators. Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani traveled to Cairo to represent Qatar. CIA Director William Burns and National Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk are attending on behalf of the USA. The heads of Israel's foreign and domestic intelligence services, David Barnea and Ronen Bar, had already traveled to Cairo on Thursday.
The talks on the Gaza war are linked to the hope of stopping an even greater expansion of the war in the Middle East. Israel and Hezbollah, which is allied with Hamas, have carried out some of the heaviest attacks in months. Hezbollah describes its attacks as retaliation for the killing of its military commander Fuad Shukr more than two weeks ago. Israel called the heavy attacks by the military in southern Lebanon an "act of self-defense".
