"I'm not afraid for myself, but for my children," one resident told the German Press Agency.
Lebanese security sources said: "The situation is very worrying." According to the report, many residents from the southern suburbs of Beirut were looking for accommodation outside the Hezbollah-dominated areas of Lebanon. Hospitals were preparing for any emergencies, especially for the next 72 hours, according to informed sources in the health sector.
Israel had killed Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in a suburb of Beirut on Tuesday evening. A few hours later, the foreign head of the Islamist Hamas, Ismail Hanija, was killed in an attack in the Iranian capital Tehran. Iran and Hamas blamed Israel for the killing of Hanija and immediately threatened to retaliate. Israel has not yet publicly commented on the accusations.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah also threatened retaliation: "The enemy (Israel) must be prepared for anger and revenge," he said in a video message at Shukr's funeral on Thursday. Hezbollah would certainly respond to the killings with "real retaliation".
