The Baltic EU and NATO country has received an undisclosed number of submachine guns worth 1.3 million euros from German weapons manufacturer Heckler & Koch as part of an arms deal. The MP7 A2 weapons were selected due to their tactical and technical characteristics, according to the Ministry of Defense in Vilnius.

According to the information provided, the first acquisition of such submachine guns is not only in line with the further development plans of the army's military capabilities. It is also a rapid response to the requirements of the security situation in the region and the lessons learned from Ukraine, the statement continued.

Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is seen as a direct threat to national security in the Baltic state bordering the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus. The government in Vilnius has therefore significantly increased military spending and is massively arming the army.

Germany is seen as a key partner in this, as the Lithuanian armed forces already use German weapons systems. A Bundeswehr armored brigade is also to be permanently stationed in Lithuania in the future.
