French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Iran's new President Massud Peseschkian to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East. According to the Élysée Palace, Macron called on Peseschkian to do everything possible to avoid further military escalation, which would be of no interest to anyone, including Iran, and would cause lasting damage to regional stability. There are fears of a military strike by Iran and its allies against Israel.

In the telephone conversation, Macron said that Iran must call on the destabilizing actors it supports to exercise the greatest restraint in order to avoid a conflagration. The logic of retaliation must be abandoned and the civilian population must be protected.

Macron also recalled the French position in favor of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a firm rejection of any escalation with Lebanon. Macron emphasized France's commitment to working towards a credible political framework for peace and security in the region, provided that Iran complies with its international obligations.

The Israeli military is currently on high alert. The country is expecting a retaliatory strike by Iran and its allies in the region. Tehran had announced "harsh punishment" for Israel after the political leader of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, Ismail Haniya, was killed in the Iranian capital Tehran a week ago. Iran and Hamas blame Israel for the attack.
