A majority of adults aged 20 to 29 would like to have two children. And mothers are more involved in childcare than fathers. In large cities, children attend childcare outside the family comparatively often.

These are the first results of the Federal Statistical Office's (FSO) Families and Generations Survey 2023, as announced by the office on Wednesday. A quarter of people in their twenties wanted three or more children, while five percent wanted one child and 17 percent did not want any children.

Compared to people aged between 50 and 59, there is a clear difference between desire and reality, according to the report. In this age group, 38 percent had two children, 19 percent had three or more children, 17 percent had one child and 25 percent were childless.
