Meat substitutes are better for the environment than meat. Replacing meat with substitute products also has health benefits. However, there is also a risk of deficiencies in essential vitamins and nutrients if meat is avoided.

This was the conclusion reached by the Swiss Foundation for Technology Assessment (TA-Swiss) in a report presented on Tuesday. In recent years, an increasing number of meat and dairy substitutes have come onto the market that promise to make nutrition more sustainable and healthier. In the study, experts investigated whether the products keep these promises.

In terms of environmental aspects, meat substitutes perform better than meat. However, the results for milk substitutes are mixed. Soy drinks perform better than cow's milk, but almond drinks consume significantly more water.

According to the report, there are certain health benefits to not eating meat, but some vitamins can only be found in animal products.
