According to media reports, a major prisoner exchange between the USA and Russia is underway. This was reported by the AP news agency, citing an unnamed source. Among the Americans to be released from Russian custody are US citizens Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, who were sentenced to long prison terms for espionage. There was initially no official confirmation of the prisoner exchange - neither from the USA nor from Russia. However, several other media outlets also reported that Russia had agreed to release Gershkovich and Whelan as part of a larger prisoner exchange.

Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin had recently repeatedly declared his willingness for an exchange. Putin has been criticized for using political prisoners as hostages in order to free Russians from Western prisons. In recent days, there have been increasing indications that an exchange could be imminent.
