After the attack on her husband, former First Lady Melania Trump calls the perpetrator a "monster" and calls on Americans to reconcile. The attacker had aimed to erase the humanity and passion of her husband Donald Trump. "Donald, the generous and loving man with whom I have had the best of times and the worst of times," the former First Lady explained in a letter published on the X platform. Melania Trump had almost never spoken publicly recently and had not played a public role in Trump's election campaign.

"When I saw this violent bullet hit my husband, Donald, I realized that my life and the life of (our son) Barron were on the verge of a devastating change," wrote Melania Trump. She thanked the "courageous" Secret Service bodyguards and security guards who had risked their own lives to protect her husband.

The 78-year-old former Republican president said he was hit in the right ear by a bullet at a campaign event in the US state of Pennsylvania on Saturday. However, he was said to be fine.

Melania Trump did not comment on her husband's health or state of mind in her post. Instead, she appealed to the people of the USA to overcome the political divide. Ultimately, all Americans belong to families who are passionately fighting for a better life together - "beyond left and right", she wrote. It's about overcoming the hatred and hostility that has given rise to violence.
