In the fight against a controversial judicial reform, Mexico's federal judges are once again laying down their work. A majority of the judges have decided to resume their strike, which ended only a few days ago and lasted several weeks, the Association of Federal Judges announced. They are resisting a constitutional reform that has already been passed, which provides for the removal of all current judges and the direct election of future judges by the people.

According to the new rules, all of the approximately 1,700 federal judgeships are to be filled between 2025 and 2027 - including those at the Supreme Court. The judges of the 32 federal states are also to be replaced gradually. The Senate recently decided by lot which judgeships should be filled next year. The judges see this as an insult, the association explained.
