The former EU chief diplomat and Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini, who is suspected of corruption, has been released. According to the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Luxembourg, all three of those arrested on Tuesday were released after questioning by the Belgian police, as there is no risk of flight.

They had previously been informed of the charges against them: Procurement fraud, corruption, conflicts of interest and breach of professional secrecy.

The EPPO has now confirmed that Mogherini was among those arrested - but without giving her name: At the request of the EUStA, the rector and a senior staff member of the College of Europe in Bruges as well as a high-ranking official of the EU Commission were arrested on Tuesday, the statement said. They are suspected of fraud in connection with EU-funded training courses for junior diplomats. Former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Mogherini is now the rector of the College of Europe, which is regarded as a training ground for EU officials and diplomats.

The College of Europe had announced that it would cooperate fully with the authorities. Mogherini headed the European External Action Service (EEAS) from 2014 to 2019 and was also Vice-President of the European Commission. The allegations relate to the period 2021-2022.
