Ten million people in Afghanistan currently have to get by on one meal or less a day. The aid organization International Rescue Committee (IRC) pointed this out today and warned of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country. According to the organization, Afghanistan still has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. Almost 24 million of the approximately 40 million inhabitants are dependent on humanitarian aid.

Last week, the head of the UN Assistance Mission (Unama), Rosa Otunbayeva, also drew attention to the precarious humanitarian situation in a speech to the UN Security Council. According to her, only 30 percent of aid funds are secured for 2024.
