According to Ukrainian reports, the Russian army has captured a good half of the eastern Ukrainian mining town of Torezk in the Donetsk region.

"An estimated 40 to 50 percent of the city is under the control of the Ukrainian armed forces. The rest of the city has been captured by the enemy," said the head of the city's military administration, Vasyl Chynchyk, on Ukrainian news television. However, further Russian advances were prevented on Thursday.

According to him, around 1,150 of the formerly over 30,000 inhabitants are still holding out in the heavily destroyed city. According to military sources, Russian troops already control several streets in the city center. There have also been Russian attacks on the neighboring town of Chassiv Yar, just 20 kilometers away.

Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion with Western help for more than two and a half years. Despite a Ukrainian advance into Russian territory in the Kursk region in August, Ukrainian troops in eastern Ukraine are increasingly under pressure. Meanwhile, according to Moscow media, Russian troops in the Kursk region have begun major counterattacks and are regaining control of the first villages. Russia had massively reinforced its armed forces there in order to bring the region completely back under Moscow's control.
