Until September 16, more than 400 warships, including submarines, and more than 90,000 members of various naval units will be deployed in the exercises, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow announced this morning. The exercises took place in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, in the Baltic and Caspian Seas as well as in the Mediterranean, where Russia has a base in the Syrian port city of Tartus.
The largest naval maneuver of the year is also seen as a demonstration of power to the West in view of the serious tensions in the wake of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Russia sees NATO in particular, whose members provide military support to Ukraine, as a threat. The aim of the maneuver was to test the readiness of the commanders of the various units of the navy in controlling the different combat units.
More than 120 aircraft and helicopters as well as around 7,000 units of technology will also be deployed during the exercise, the ministry added. The use of high-precision weapons and war technology in the destruction of important strategic targets and enemy positions as well as the interaction with troop units of allied countries will be practiced. Members of other security structures are also involved, including the Ministry of the Interior, the FSB domestic intelligence service and the Russian National Guard and Security Service.
The "Оzean" maneuvers have a long tradition. Even in Soviet times, they were the largest exercises to test the combat readiness of the giant empire's navy with its numerous access points to the world's oceans.
