  • The number of asylum seekers from Maghreb countries has fallen by 62 percent in Zurich and by 42 percent across Switzerland since April.
  • The reason for this is that the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) has introduced a 24-hour procedure for asylum applications from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya.
  • The waiting time for an asylum decision has fallen from 52 to 17 days.

Following the introduction of the 24-hour procedure in the Zurich asylum region, 62 percent fewer asylum seekers from Maghreb countries are being held in federal asylum centers. Across Switzerland, the number of these asylum seekers has fallen by 42 percent since last April.

This was announced by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Saturday. This procedure was introduced as a pilot project in Zurich in November 2023. Since April 2024, the SEM has been processing asylum applications from people from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya in a 24-hour procedure.

The average time it takes to receive an asylum decision in the first instance has fallen from 52 to 17 days thanks to the new procedures. This would noticeably reduce the burden on the federal asylum structures. The number of security-related incidents in the federal asylum centers has also fallen by 42 percent, the SEM added.
