Eight retired and active soldiers from the Taiwanese army have been sentenced to several years in prison for spying on behalf of China. According to a court in Taipei, the men - some of them from a special unit - had, among other things, transmitted documents containing secret information to the People's Republic and accepted bribes. According to the prosecution, some of the defendants cooperated with China in exchange for money for a video entitled "I will surrender to the People's Liberation Army".

The investigation also revealed that China paid the men with a digital currency. The authorities left the details open. The eight convicts face between 1.5 and 13 years in prison. Another defendant acted as an intermediary between the soldiers and China. He failed to appear in court several times and, according to the authorities, probably left the country. Taiwan is looking for him by arrest warrant. The sentences can still be appealed.
