Sudan has been in the grip of a serious humanitarian crisis for 16 months since the start of the bloody power struggle between al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The country is facing famine and more than ten million people have been displaced by fighting and bombing. According to the World Food Program (WFP), more than 25 million people in Sudan are acutely threatened by hunger. That is a good half of the total population.
Aid organizations have been calling on the parties to the conflict for months to provide access to the people in need. Aid supplies can only reach the Darfur region in particular via Chad.
Talks are currently underway in Switzerland to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The aim is to achieve a ceasefire in order to get more humanitarian aid into the country for millions of people. However, the army led by al-Burhan has not sent a representative.
According to the State Department, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a telephone conversation with al-Burhan on Wednesday evening (local time), in which he emphasized the need for participation in the talks and an end to the conflict.
