In the past, the cantons of Zurich and Thurgau did not take sufficient responsibility for adoptions from India. This was revealed by a study presented on Friday. Adoptions were arranged without the parents.

There were shortcomings throughout the entire process, as the canton of Zurich announced on Friday. Among other things, the analysis of 48 cases showed that adoptions were systematically carried out without a declaration of renunciation from the parents.
According to the study, the responsible authorities in the cantons accepted that they were missing key documents. In addition, the canton of Zurich allowed a placement agency to operate that did not have the necessary authorization.
The study examined adoptions in the two cantons between 1973 and 2002. 2278 children from India were adopted throughout Switzerland during this period. Of these, 256 were in the canton of Zurich and 30 in the canton of Thurgau. Other studies showed similar problems, for example in the canton of St. Gallen in 2022 regarding adoptions from Sri Lanka.
