The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (Sust), which investigates accidents involving public transport, ships and civilian aircraft, needs to reduce the number of pending cases, particularly in the area of aircraft accidents. This is the recommendation of the Swiss Federal Audit Office (SFAO).

In its report published on Wednesday, the SFAO found that a number of investigations could not be completed on time. This is not an additional safety risk. This is because Sust publishes interim reports on security-relevant findings.

Sust has been pressing ahead with the reduction of its pending dossiers since 2019. The SFAO writes that the pending cases for rail and shipping accidents have largely disappeared and the pending situation for air accidents has stabilized at a high level. It therefore recommends that Sust take swift action.

According to the report, the fact that investigations take time is due to the complexity of the investigations and the fact that investigations run in parallel. Sust notes that steps have already been taken to reduce pending cases.
