Rudy Giuliani has lost his license to practice law.
The close ally of former President Donald Trump represented him in his attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election.
A New York court ruled that Giuliani had demonstrably lied in the process.
The 80-year-old has already had to pay fines for defamation for his claim that election workers threw away ballot papers for Trump and produced some for Biden instead.
The US state of New York revokes the law license of long-time Trump ally Rudy Giuliani. As Trump's defense attorney, the now 80-year-old "demonstrably disseminated false and misleading statements to courts, legislators and the general public" about an allegedly stolen vote after the 2020 US election.
This is what a New York appeals court wrote in its reasoning. "These false statements were made to falsely bolster the defendant's claim that his client's victory in the 2020 US presidential election was stolen due to widespread voter fraud," the ruling continued.
Further lawsuits loom
The misconduct could not be emphasized enough. Giuliani had exploited his prominent position to tell lies. The numerous different conspiracy theories have already had serious consequences for Giuliani. He is facing lawsuits in the states of Arizona and Georgia.
He has to pay two election workers 148 million dollars for defamation. Giuliani falsely claimed after the election that aides like them had thrown away ballot papers for Trump and counted fake ballots for Democrat Joe Biden. After the verdict, he filed for bankruptcy.
From hero to controversial figure
The new verdict marks a further decline for the former mayor of New York. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Giuliani became a national hero for many people due to his crisis management.
In Trump's service, however, Giuliani has increasingly become the target of ridicule and jokes due to his erratic and sometimes ridiculous public appearances. He is also controversial because of his role on January 6, 2021: before Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Giuliani helped to stir up the atmosphere at a rally.
