In Afghanistan, a woman has been convicted of adultery and publicly flogged. She had also tried to run away from home, as the Supreme Court of the country's ruling Islamist Taliban announced. She was punished with 30 lashes in public.

The punishment had already been carried out on Sunday in the northern Afghan province of Farjab in the presence of Taliban representatives and local residents. At the same time, the woman received a six-month prison sentence.

According to the Supreme Court, two people were also publicly flogged on Sunday in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar for alleged homosexual acts. They are also said to have received prison sentences of one year each.

Following their return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban reintroduced public punishments, including executions and floggings for crimes such as murder, robbery and adultery, despite criticism from human rights organizations and the United Nations. Since then, five men convicted of murder have been publicly executed.
