Iran World Security Council to meet today on Middle East

In view of a possible escalation of the war in the Middle East, the UN Security Council is to meet in New York for an emergency session. Several diplomats told the German Press Agency that a meeting requested by Iran and supported by China, Russia and Algeria will take place today at 10 p.m. CEST.

Tensions in the Middle East had risen following the targeted killing of a high-ranking leader of the Islamist Hamas - Iran and Hamas are threatening Israel with retaliation. According to Hamas, its foreign chief, Ismail Hanija, was killed in an Israeli attack in Tehran. The government in Jerusalem has not yet commented on this.
