As in May, the weather in June was very changeable. There was exceptionally little sunshine. Apart from a few days, there was no summer heat. Heavy thunderstorms characterized the weather and caused extensive damage.

Only from June 16 to 20 was there widespread precipitation-free weather, as reported by MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, in its monthly report on Friday. The national average temperature was 13.1 degrees, 0.5 degrees above the 1991 to 2020 norm and 3.7 degrees above the pre-industrial reference period of 1871 to 1900.

The duration of sunshine remained below average in many areas. Locally, MeteoSwiss recorded just over half the usual hours of sunshine. The heavy rainfall in May and the wet start to the month led to flooding from Lake Lucerne to Lake Constance and on the Rhine.

Heavy thunderstorm with extensive damage

On June 21, a cold front from the west brought very warm subtropical air over the Alps. This led to heavy thunderstorms. In the southern valleys of Valais, 40 to 50 liters of rain per square metre fell. There was flooding in the Zermatt region.

On the southern side of the Alps, the Misox received the greatest amount of rain in a very short time - with devastating consequences and two fatalities recovered so far. One person is still missing.

On June 25, 112.9 liters of rain fell within two hours in L'Auberson in the Vaud Jura - the fourth-highest amount ever recorded by MeteoSwiss for this period. Despite the storms and flooding, the amount of precipitation in June remained well within the norm.
