A large-scale power outage in the Basel region was caused by a fault at a substation in Münchenstein. The grid there went down for two hours shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday. A firefighter was taken to hospital on suspicion of smoke inhalation.

According to the police, the "technical fault" occurred at the headquarters of Primeo Energie in Münschenstein BL. According to the Basel-Landschaft police, several municipalities in the lower Basel region such as Münchenstein, Muttenz, Arlesheim, Binningen, Reinach and Bottmingen were affected by the power outage. It also affected streetcar lines 10 and 11 of Baselland Transport BLT as well as various traffic lights.

As Primeo Energie's headquarters were also directly affected, the company website and the press office's telephone system were temporarily unavailable, as the company explained on Monday evening. The substation in Münchenstein is a central hub in the regional distribution network and supplies large parts of the Basel region with electricity.
