USA Largest Stegosaurus skeleton to be auctioned in New York

The largest stegosaurus skeleton ever found is to be auctioned off in New York next week. The fossil, which is estimated to be around 150 million years old, was exhibited by Sotheby's in the US metropolis on Wednesday (local time).

It will be on display until the auction on July 17. The auction house is hoping for proceeds of four to six million dollars.

The giant skeleton with the name Apex is more than three meters high and around eight meters long. According to Sotheby's, it is considered to be "the most complete and best preserved" Stegosaurus specimen of its size. Of the estimated 319 dinosaur bones, 254 have been found and preserved. Stegosaurus translates as "roof lizard", which refers to the dinosaur's distinctive, roof-shaped bone plates.

Dinosaur skeletons have been auctioned off several times in recent years. In summer 2020, "Stan", the world's most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, found a new owner for a record 31.8 million dollars. Last year, a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ("Trinity") was auctioned off in Zurich. A charitable art foundation paid 5.5 million francs for it.
