  • Mutated cockroaches are spreading in Mallorca.
  • They are more resistant to biocide products and therefore more difficult to combat.
  • But tourists need not worry.

Mutated cockroaches are spreading on Mallorca: the cockroaches are particularly resistant, reports the German magazine "Der Spiegel ", citing Anecpla, the National Association of Environmental Health Companies in Spain.

The climate crisis is fueling this development: according to association head Jorge Galván, it means that "the life cycle of insects such as bugs or, in this case, cockroaches is accelerating exponentially". Cockroaches like high humidity and grow best at temperatures between 27 and 30 degrees.

Exterminators are "well trained"

It has recently been hot and humid on Mallorca and the neighboring islands. At the same time, there are "indications that cockroaches have suffered from a series of random genetic mutations in recent years that make them resistant to the biocidal products that have been used to control them to date".

In other words, the insects are not only multiplying rapidly, but are also more resistant. In the first quarter of the year, there were 37 percent more cases of cockroach infestation on the island compared to the previous year than in the rest of Spain.

However, holidaymakers need not worry: "The authorities and pest control companies in Spain are well trained for any situation in this regard," says Galván. Tourists should just avoid leaving food out in the open.
