Mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner looks at the trend towards outdoor clothing in Germany's city centers with some amusement. "People in the pedestrian zone are dressed as if they want to climb Everest the next day," the 79-year-old told the German Press Agency at his Juval Castle near Merano in South Tyrol. When asked whether he had a guilty conscience because he may have contributed to the trend himself, he replied: "No, I don't."

Messner went on to say that he himself wears a lot of functional clothing - but for practical reasons, not for fashion considerations. The world's most famous mountaineer will be 80 years old next month. Messner was the first person to stand on the summit of all 14 eight-thousanders, including the highest mountain of all, Mount Everest. The Italian has an advertising contract with a company that sells outdoor clothing.
