The city of Bern is installing metering traffic lights on Tiefenaustrasse towards the city center. From mid-August, this will prevent traffic from backing up into the Neufeld Tunnel during peak traffic times, as the city announced on Thursday.

The traffic lights will be controlled by traffic jam monitoring. If it detects an overload in the direction of the city center, traffic coming from Worblaufen will be temporarily held back.

For travelers coming from Worblaufen in the direction of the city center, the journey time may therefore be longer if the dosage is activated, as the press release explains further. The metering will remain active until the congestion has cleared or the resulting backlog restricts access from Worblaufen to the Neufeld Tunnel.

According to the press release, the work will start next Monday, June 24, and is expected to last until mid-August. There may be localized traffic obstructions.

The planned metering traffic lights are part of the traffic management measures on the central traffic axis (ZVA). In July 2022, the City of Bern parliament approved a loan of CHF 1.845 million for the entire project.

The ZVA runs from the Forsthaus freeway exit via Inselplatz and the railroad station to Bollwerk - and from there via Nordring to the Wankdorf junction on the one hand, and via Tiefenaustrasse to the Neufeld feeder road on the other.
