Two days after a mining accident in Poland, a miner was rescued alive after all.
The 32-year-old miner was reported missing after an earthquake at a depth of around 1200 meters.
One of his colleagues died in the accident and 17 others were injured.
An air ambulance was waiting at the entrance to the mine. The head of the mine's operating group, Leszek Pietraszek, said that rescue workers had reached the 32-year-old miner on Saturday afternoon. He was able to speak but had breathing problems. A doctor then administered first aid to him and prepared him for transportation to the surface.
Around 80 miners were in the area when a magnitude 3.1 earthquake triggered a tremor at a depth of around 1200 meters on Thursday. This caused rocks to be thrown into a corridor where the miner was found on Saturday. One of his colleagues died in the accident and 17 others were injured.
Rock in coal mines can come under tension, which is then suddenly released in massive vibrations. This can cause chunks of rock to be thrown suddenly into the tunnels and endanger the miners. There have also been gas explosions in some Polish coal mines.
