Around 1.5 million people were affected by heavy rainfall, landslides and flooding, it added. Numerous houses were also destroyed. Around 25,000 inhabitants had sought refuge in emergency shelters such as schools or stadiums. Many farmers lost their livestock or farmland.

There is no improvement in sight: meteorologists have predicted more rain in the world's most populous country.

The monsoon season in South Asia begins in June and lasts until around September. Heavy rainfall, which can lead to severe flooding and landslides, is common. Time and again, this has deadly consequences.

At the same time, the rain is important for agriculture, which provides a large proportion of the 1.4 billion inhabitants with a livelihood. Scientists say that in view of climate change, particularly heavy rain is becoming more frequent.
