At least 13 people have died in floods in Bangladesh. A high-ranking employee of the country's disaster control authority told reporters.

In total, almost 4.5 million people have been affected by the floods in the east of the country, which has a population of more than 170 million. The background to this is the monsoon rain that occurs at this time of year.

Houses and farmland are reportedly under water. The army, fire department and civil defense, among others, have been deployed. They distributed relief supplies and took those affected to emergency shelters. Helicopters were also used.

The monsoon season in South Asia usually lasts from June to September - and hundreds of people and animals die every year. The rain is also vital for agriculture. At the same time, however, it repeatedly causes major damage - destroying houses, triggering landslides and flooding roads.
