According to initial findings, the 49-year-old motorcyclist from the Principality of Liechtenstein, who lives in Austria, was driving along the Oberalpstrasse from Disentis/Mustér towards Flims with his 53-year-old wife shortly after 4.45 pm, as reported by the Graubünden cantonal police on Saturday.
At the same time, a 31-year-old German female driver living in the canton of Graubünden was driving from Flims onto the single-track section of the main road to turn left. She failed to see the oncoming motorcycle and there was a violent head-on collision. There was then a subsequent collision between the motorcycle and a car parked at the junction, according to the report.
According to the press release, the motorcyclist died of his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. The passenger was flown by Rega to the Graubünden Cantonal Hospital in Chur with moderate injuries. The slightly injured female driver was taken to the Surselva regional hospital by the Surselva rescue service. The three occupants of the passenger car involved in the subsequent collision remained uninjured, it was reported.
The Oberalpstrasse was completely closed for an hour in the area of the accident due to rescue and recovery work, resulting in major tailbacks.
Together with the Graubünden public prosecutor's office, the Graubünden cantonal police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
