Rock and mudslides have temporarily interrupted an important road link over the Arlberg in western Austria. The Arlberg road should be reopened to traffic around midday on Thursday, according to the province of Vorarlberg.

According to the police, a mudslide buried the Arlbergstrasse near the village of Stuben the previous evening during a thunderstorm with heavy rain. Another mudslide occurred above the Passau tunnel, which was filled 1.5 meters high with mud and stones over a length of around 100 meters. No vehicles or people were buried. Clean-up work began immediately.

The Arlbergstrasse (L197) connects the federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg. As the Arlberg tunnel is currently also impassable due to renovation work, the only remaining alternative routes for cars due to the mudslide were the route via the municipality of Lech and a wide bypass for trucks.
