  • In August, a 38-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly drugging his wife in Kehrsatz BE and strangling her in her sleep.
  • The Federal Supreme Court has now dismissed his appeal against his preventive detention on the grounds that he is a flight risk.
  • The man denies the crime and claims that his wife committed suicide.

According to the ruling by the Regional Court of Bern-Mittelland, the 38-year-old murdered his wife in December 2022 in the apartment they shared. He is said to have given her the sleeping pill Dormicum and then strangled her in her sleep. He was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment for this. He has lodged an appeal.

The Federal Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by the man against the security detention ordered, according to a ruling published on Wednesday. Switzerland's highest court confirmed the view of the Bernese High Court that there was a risk of absconding.

With the first-instance ruling of the regional court, the man had become aware of the real danger that he might have to serve a long prison sentence. Furthermore, he has neither a fixed place of residence nor a job.

The complainant maintains his innocence to this day. He stated during the proceedings that his wife had been mentally distressed and had committed suicide. The devout Christian and follower of a free church had an extramarital relationship. Before his wife's death, he had searched the internet for information on the sleeping pill Dormicum and on strangling people.
