In future, tourists will be able to travel by train between Milan and the French coastal city of Nice. The Italian railroad company Treni Turistici Italiani announced on Wednesday that the new connection will open on August 3.

The first train will depart from Milan and arrive in Nice six hours and 25 minutes later. The connection will be offered at weekends throughout the summer - with two return journeys on Saturday and Sunday.

The train will be able to transport 600 passengers in its ten carriages. Italian dishes will be served in the dining car.

The new service is a far cry from a high-speed connection, admitted the company's president, Luigi Cantamessa, when he presented the train at Nice station. But "the Côte d'Azur is a dream for all northern Italians", he explained.

For the French, however, the new train connection offers the opportunity to travel to Milan via Ventimiglia and Genoa without having to change trains. "They can take the train from Nice at 5 p.m. on Sunday and arrive in Milan at 11 p.m.," explained Cantamessa.

According to the information provided, several dozen passengers have already booked tickets for the maiden voyage. Prices start at 50 euros for a one-way ticket.
