According to information from the Ticino cantonal police, roads in Chiasso, Morbio Inferiore, Novazzano and Coldrerio were closed on Sunday. In addition, the Ponte Faloppia customs house in Seseglio near Chiasso had to be closed due to flooding.
The two access roads to the Muggio Valley have also been closed since midday on Sunday. Landslides had made access impossible here. The valley at the southern end of Switzerland was cut off.
In addition to the fire department and the police, specialists from the cantonal forestry service, the cantonal geoinformation office and the watercourses office were also deployed to the locations affected by the storms. They were checking the general situation - particularly in the upper Muggio Valley, the police stated.
The Mendrisiotto civil defense is also active and ready to provide facilities to accommodate people if necessary.
The population is asked to restrict their movements and not to go into the affected areas unless absolutely necessary.
