The Obwalden government has applied to the cantonal parliament for a loan of CHF 5 million to upgrade the southern shore of Lake Alpnach. It wants to restore ecologically significant water exchange zones with underwater filling.

He wants to achieve this with surplus excavated material from two other hydraulic engineering projects, as the Obwalden State Chancellery announced on Thursday. This could also save landfill fees amounting to CHF 1.1 million.

The government assumes that the federal government will contribute 65% of the costs of the project, the statement continued. This is due to the great potential for enhancement and the benefits for nature and the landscape.

The upgrading of the south bank is expected to take place between 2025 and 2027. The Cantonal Council will discuss the matter in September.
