Of the three canton-owned hospital stock corporations in Aargau, only the psychiatric services in Windisch have achieved their financial targets. The cantonal hospitals in Baden and Aarau fell short of the targets set by the canton of Aargau as the owner in 2023, as the State Chancellery announced on Wednesday.

Like all hospitals in Switzerland, the Aargau hospital joint stock companies are affected by the difficult market conditions in the healthcare sector. Inflation can only be insufficiently reflected in the tariffs. Margins have therefore fallen significantly compared to the previous year. At Kantonsspital Baden (KSB), the operating result before interest and depreciation (EBITDA) amounted to 5.1 percent, at Kantonsspital Aargau (KSA) to 4.6 percent.
Only PDAG, at 8.2 percent, just achieved the target value of 8 percent set by the canton in its ownership strategy. In the longer term, the canton is aiming for a target value of 10 percent, according to the statement, in order to achieve "sustainable refinancing of the investments required for operations".
The 2023 annual financial statements were approved at the Annual General Meeting in June. The KSB Board of Directors was also expanded: Sacha Geier was elected as a new member of the Board of Directors. The doctor from the canton of Glarus was previously President of the Board of Directors of Spital Uster AG, among others. The new Vice Chairman of the KSB Board of Directors is Christoph Zimmerli.
