A Biel committee has collected over 5500 signatures in support of the preservation of the local station Telebielingue. These are to be handed over to the Federal Chancellery tomorrow.

The petition "Telebielingue, our regional identity" was signed by 5544 people, as the committee wrote in a press release on Monday.

The petition demands that the license for Telebielingue be renewed. The local television station belongs to the region of Biel, Seeland, Grenchen, Bernese Jura, Murten and the lake district. The decision of the Federal Office of Communications not to renew the license is purely administrative and ignores the cultural and linguistic interests of the region.

The bilingual regional television station Telebielingue, which is based in Biel, came away empty-handed when the federal government awarded the license in January. Instead, the contract was awarded to the Neuchâtel broadcaster Canal Alpha, which also intends to operate a program for the Biel/Bienne/Seeland/Bernese Jura region in the future with Canal B.

Telebielingue belongs to the Biel-based Gassmann Group and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024.
