A bodyguard of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been arrested for allegedly betting on the date of the general election. Sunak had surprisingly announced at the end of May that the next general election would take place on July 4. For a long time, a date in the fall was considered likely. The British news agency PA reported on Wednesday that the Gambling Commission is now investigating the police officer's case for possible violations.

The Metropolitan Police announced that the supervisory authority had contacted them. A police officer was temporarily detained on Monday for possible misconduct in a public office.

A week ago, it emerged that a close associate of Sunak's had allegedly bet on a July appointment. Conservative MP Craig Williams admitted on Platform X: "I bet on the general election a few weeks ago." It is unclear whether Williams used insider knowledge for the bet. A spokesperson for the Gambling Commission emphasized at the time that betting using inside information is a criminal offence.
