The X-ray image of a piece of luggage belonging to a Russian woman shows a special object: a 60-centimeter-long walrus tusk.

The 24-year-old woman with the walrus tooth wants to use the customs exit for those travelers who have nothing to declare. At that moment, the customs officers strike and stop the woman.

Requirements for products from protected animals

The 1.8 kilogram tusk, decorated with drawings, is wrapped in a bed sheet. Her father had given it to her as a present, the woman explains.

Because walruses are a specially protected species, special regulations must be observed when importing them, according to the main customs office in Potsdam.

The traveler now faces a fine of around 9400 Swiss francs.
