SBB is having to prematurely renovate the platform roofs at 200 smaller stations throughout Switzerland. This is due to construction faults that occurred 20 years ago. The costs amount to 70 million francs.

The roofs built at that time had no or too small a slope, SBB announced on Wednesday in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency. This was first reported by the "Schweizer Eisenbahn-Revue" and several online portals. The standing water then caused damage to the roofs.

These will now be replaced by platform roofs with a minimum gradient. The steel structures have been retained. SBB is attempting to coordinate the renovation work with the expansion projects in connection with the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act.

The costs of CHF 70 million will be spread over the years from 2020 to 2029. This also includes the maintenance of the roofs.

Due to the defects, SBB has also adjusted the guidelines for platform roofs. They must now have a minimum slope in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The seals have also been improved to ensure that the platform roofs achieve the required service life in future.
