The cantonal government of Schwyz has spoken out against the SVP's cantonal popular initiative for protection against large carnivores. The federal law leaves the cantons no leeway for their own large carnivore policy, the government explains.

According to federal law, large carnivores are protected, as the Schwyz State Chancellery announced on Thursday. Even if the initiative is accepted, nothing would change in practice due to federal legislation.

The SVP Canton Schwyz initiative calls for regulations to protect against large carnivores and to limit and regulate their population, as stated. The promotion of large carnivores should also be prohibited.

In November 2022, parliament adopted the SVP's standing initiative by 65 votes to 19. At the time, the SVP, FDP and Center Party were in favour of stricter regulation of the wolf population.
