Seven people have died in a devastating fire at a hotel in South Korea. According to the official news agency Yonhap, the fire broke out on Thursday evening in Bucheon, a suburb west of the capital Seoul. According to the authorities, a further twelve people were injured, three of them seriously. None of them were in mortal danger.

The fire, which started on Thursday evening for unknown reasons, initially spread to a room on the eighth floor of the hotel. According to the fire department, some of the victims died while trying to save themselves by jumping out of windows onto the safety cushions provided. Other fatalities were found in the stairwell and hallway of the hotel.

The hotel is located away from the popular tourist resorts. A total of 27 guests are said to have been in the building at the time of the accident. Around 160 firefighters were deployed and were able to bring the fire under control around two and a half hours after it broke out.
