Specifically, SBB is purchasing 36 locomotives from Stadler in a first step, with an option for a further 93 locomotives. This is "a key step in the necessary transformation of rail freight transport", SBB's Head of Freight Transport Alexander Muhm was quoted as saying in a press release issued by Stadler on Thursday.
The four-axle electric multi-system locomotives from Stadler represent "a new standard", according to the company. Their design also allows, for example, the use of two diesel engines or two traction battery modules for operation over the last mile on non-electrified routes.
Energy consumption is also low and automatic digital coupling is possible. The initial configuration for Switzerland, Germany and Austria could also be extended to other countries in the future, it added.
SBB wants to completely renew its rolling stock in rail freight transport by 2050. This should reduce the operating costs of the SBB freight fleet by around 60 percent, as announced by SBB.
