As part of the agreement, the 52-year-old will plead guilty to one count relating to the US Espionage Act, Stella Assange told the BBC on Tuesday. In return, the Australian will no longer be imprisoned in the USA.

However, the deal still has to be confirmed by a court in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific, his wife said. "Once the judge signs it, it's formally real."

The lawyer and activist was waiting for Assange in Australia with their two children. In a post on X, she published a photo showing her on a video call with her husband. "Julian calls last night (to him during the day) from Stansted Airport in Sydney," she wrote. According to Wikileaks, Assange was released on Monday after more than five years in prison in London and left the UK in the afternoon.

Stella Assange told the BBC about her husband's release: "Honestly it's just unbelievable, it feels like it's not real." The past few days had triggered a storm of emotions. She has not yet had time to discuss what the couple will do after their release. The priority is that Julian Assange "gets better - he's been in a terrible state for five years".
