Annual inflation in Switzerland fell significantly in September. Prices also fell compared to the previous month.

Specifically, inflation fell to 0.8 percent in September from 1.1 percent in August, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday. This means that Swiss consumer goods were on average 0.8% more expensive than in the same month last year. Domestic goods are still relatively significantly more expensive than a year ago (+2.0%), while imported goods (-2.7%) are still clearly cheaper than a year ago.

Inflation is now at its lowest level since July 2021. Switzerland is still in a better position compared to other countries, although the differences have recently narrowed. In the eurozone, the last available figure (September) was 1.8%, in the USA (August) it was 2.5%.

Core inflation also fell in September, to 1.0% from 1.1% in August. This excludes price changes for the food and energy segments, which are often very volatile. Central banks often look at this figure more than the general inflation figure when combating inflation.

Prices also down month-on-month

Compared to the previous month of August, prices have fallen by 0.3% overall. According to the FSO, this decline is due to various factors, including lower prices for package tours abroad, for the para-hotel industry and for air travel.

Prices for petrol, heating oil and diesel have also fallen. In contrast, prices for clothing and shoes have risen, as have those for berries and fruit vegetables.
